I also found some other interesting stuff on your blog. The dutch curiousities. I really enjoy reading them as I’m Dutch myself.
You made clear not everything is as normal as might be thaught. And you right!
It also makes clear that you are in or close to Amsterdam most of the time. Amsterdam is an old city with narrow streets and small houses. To save some room the stairways are narrow and steep. Amsterdam is part of a region called ‘de randstad’. The region is outlined by the triangle formed by Rotterdam, Haarlem/Amsterdam and Utrecht. It houses almost 50% of all the people in the Netherlands. So it is crowded. Really crowded.
I’d like to invite/encourage you the visit some places outside ‘de randstad’. Everything is so different there. Houses are bigger and have big gardens or land around them, making the houses (semi-)detached. Cities are smaller and there is far less traffic, making it very easy to cross the street.
I’d suggest a visit to Giethoorn. Go on a boat trip when you’re there. You see some typical old fishermen houses. I like it more then Volendam or Zaanse Schans.
Also visit Westerbork and/or Dwingeloo. Both are little villages in the north part of the Netherlands.
Westerbork was very important during world war 2, but it is also an important place because of the ‘Westerbork array’ aka ‘Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT)’. An array of 14 radio telescopes with diameters of 25 metres each. It is also part of the LOFAR project. LOFAR = Low Frequency Array.
Dwingeloo is situated in a national parc (Dwingelerveld) and houses the Planetron observatory. It has a Zeiss-planetarium and Hollands biggest optical telescope. Both being accessable to public on certain days.

When you’re interested in (seeing) the Westerbork/Dwingeloo area, just contact me, I live close to it. I moved from Haarlem to Assen about 4 years ago. So I can help you out with questions about the Haarlem and/or Assen/Westerbork/Dwingeloo region. When you plan a trip to Haarlem go to the VVV at the trainstation in Haarlem and ask for the ‘hofjes wandeling’. It takes you along some very nice and rustic places in the very middle of busy Haarlem. Have a look a the Bavo church and the city hall. Also the Teylers museum is a must see when you’re in Haarlem. It displays some very first electricity inventions like the biggest electrostatic generator of the 18th century and the first Leyden jar ever made (in 1744)

Hi Ronald,

I will certainly try and see some of the places you have mentioned. I can already cross of St Bavo in Haarlem – a truly magnificent church.

I do intend to explore the country as much as I can.

Westerbork sounds particularly alluring, since I have always had a fascination with astronomy (as you may have guessed) so that will certainly be added to my list of places to visit
